Today our United States Navy celebrated its 237th birthday. That line holds countless stories in itself, some from years ago and some we’ve yet to hear, however, as stated on the navy.mil website, “we honor the Sailors that came before us and the ones who keep us strong today.” People celebrated today in various ways, with many sailors being on a current deployment, however for those on our home front the USS Midway hosted a celebration, birthday cake and all, on their flight deck.
In 2004, the USS Midway (CV-41) opened their hatches to the public, this time as a museum. This extraordinary aircraft carrier, the first to be commissioned after World War II’s end, is now based here in San Diego. In fact, as my family’s business is a private charter catamaran, the Aolani, we sail right by the USS Midway on a regular basis. We wave to the smiles that stand on its deck, a length equivalent to three football fields. The aircraft turned museum now offers its flight deck for various events, today’s being a birthday celebration.
Free to the public, the USS Midway hosted the Navy Region Southwest Band, as well as a flyover.
While I walked around the deck, amongst the festive red white and blue, a young man in uniform stood on the deck tall and confident, as he posed for a picture being taken by his proud Mom. I watched as his family smiled at him in satisfaction. I smiled, too. On a day such as this we are reminded of all the individuals that make our military possible; our Navy strong, and I thank them for that, just as I did today.
